I entered the Colonial Service in 1865 as a Cadet, and after passing the prescribed examinations in Chinese was appointed Private Secretary and subsequently Public Magistrate and Coroner.

During my first leave of absence I was called to the English Bar, and from July 1876 to January 1877 acted as Attorney General of this Colony.

From March 1878 to January 1889 I acted as Puisne Judge when I was appointed to act again as Attorney General, a post which I held till March 1881.
